As I step into my 40s, it feels like exactly the right moment to pause, reflect, and yes—throw a party. As a single gay man, I haven’t followed the traditional (and wonderful) paths of marriage or children that many in my life have, and I often encounter the idea that my life is “less than”, because I don’t have these things.

As I hit 40, my reflections on this milestone aren’t lost in regret about the road less travelled, but focus on celebrating a life I genuinely love and the things I’m proud of. It’s about embracing a life that feels full - with happiness I’ve built in authenticity and independence, that is grounded in deep friendships, meaningful experiences, and a vocation that continues to challenge and inspire me (and of course enhanced by my tiny landcloud, Disco.

It’s also a moment to honour those quieter milestones of growth, resilience, and maturity (or immaturity) - and to celebrate with all of you who’ve shaped me and helped make this life one I love.

Bring on 40, and bring on the Saturday Night Fever!

  • Bradley John Kerin was born and raised in Perth, Western Australia, where he began life as a gentle, happy child who sang before he could talk. Together with older siblings Tim and Kylie, he grew up surrounded by music, books, pets, and chaotic games of 52-card pickup. His school years included trumpet lessons, hockey games, and an underpaid career as a music theatre and opera child star, which came to an abrupt end when his voice broke and he became a sullen teenager.

Following high school, Brad legally turned 18 and received a second middle name ‘Thomas’ for his birthday. What followed was seven memorable years at the University of Western Australia running student clubs and charities, partying far too hard, and living like a sewer rat in a Nedlands share house - eventually emerging with two degrees and becoming a real adult working in various communications and strategy roles in Perth.

In 2015, Brad packed up his car and drove to Melbourne, briefly living like Boo Radley in his friend Raf’s attic before landing a role at the Carbon Market Institute that launched a career in climate change policy and carbon markets - a journey that has brought him to the wonderful team at WeAct, a global carbon project developer and trader.

After a decade on the east coast, making it though Melbourne COVID lockdowns, and traveling across the world, Brad calls Brunswick East home. He has built a wonderful community of friends and peers, lives proudly as an out gay man, and - most importantly - shares his life with Disco the Samoyed, who arrived in December 2024 and promptly stole the spotlight.

This birthday is a celebration of all the experiences that have brought him here, the people who have made life richer along the way, and the exciting adventures still to come. Brad is looking forward to sharing laughs, creating memories, and, of course, enjoying a well-deserved boogie with everyone who means the most to him!

  • Born on 25th October 2024, Disco Martini Kerin is a 1-year old Samoyed puppy, otherwise known as floof, squishy boy, landcloud, polar bear, white lion, and “is there any actual dog in there?”. Traditionally bred as an arctic working breed sled dog, this individual is good at chewing sticks, not listening to instructions, and making loud ‘awoos’ at anyone who will listen.

Disco is named for his signature disco-dancing trot - the spring in his step that keeps the Solid Gold Dancing Queen dream alive. He’s a super sweet boy who loves people and is beloved by everyone he meets.

You will all have a chance to squish him in person as he will be the official greeter of Brad’s 40th Solid Gold Disco - so prepare for all the pats!

In the meantime you can follow his adventures on instagram at @disco.sammy #influencer #instafamous #shamelessplug

  • I don’t have to tell you that, you’re not even my real dad.
